Henrico County Inmate Search

Henrico County inmate records track who is held in the county jail and where. A Henrico County inmate search runs through the Sheriff's official jail lookup, which shows current custody by name. It is a custody locator, not a criminal history report, so it does not list charges, bond, or court dates. The Sheriff's Office runs two facilities, Regional Jail West and Regional Jail East, and a person can be held at either. To find someone in Henrico custody, start with the official inmate search, then use court records for the case itself. Keeping those sources separate makes the search far simpler.

Henrico Inmate Search Disclaimers

The Sheriff is direct about what the search is and is not. The page states the data should not be relied on for legal action and that all defendants are presumed innocent until found guilty. An arrest is not an indication of guilt. The office does not warrant the accuracy of the data.

Important: The Sheriff does not provide case dispositions or charge information through the inmate search; contact the charging agency or the court clerk for those.

For the arrest-record side of custody, see the Henrico County arrest records page.

Henrico Regional Jail West

Jail Services there include education, substance-abuse and mental-health programs, religious services, mail, visitation, property, laundry, and recreation.

Henrico Regional Jail East

Regional Jail East sits on 76 acres in New Kent County and was dedicated September 17, 1996. Henrico calls it a new-generation, campus-style jail, the first of its kind in the Commonwealth. It was built under a regional agreement among Goochland, Henrico, and New Kent counties. It uses direct supervision, which means deputies work inside the housing areas with fewer barriers to encourage communication and prevent problems.

An inmate may be held here even though it is outside Henrico's borders.

Booking and the Intake Process

When a person is brought to a Henrico jail, they pass through intake before they appear in the inmate search. Jail West runs an Intake and Release Booking section that uses imaging technology to process and release inmates. Booking records identity, takes property into control, and includes a medical screening. Only after booking is complete does a name show up in the public locator.

This is why a very recent arrest may not appear right away.

If you cannot find a recently arrested person, wait and search again, or call the facility. The booking queue and shift timing can delay when a record posts to the public search, so a missing name is not always a release.

Jail Programs and Services

Both facilities provide services well beyond basic custody. Jail Services include laundry, recreation, virtual visitation, property control, mail delivery, religious services, and mental-health and substance-abuse support. Education is a core part of what the jail offers, and the programs are meant to prepare people for release.

Example programs at Jail West include GED preparation and testing, computer technology, parenting and fatherhood classes, substance-abuse and relapse prevention, and group and individual counseling. Jail East provides laundry, recreation, virtual visitation, property control, mail delivery, and religious services on its campus.

These services connect to the population data covered on the jail population page, which describes how the count breaks down by status.

Charges and Dispositions Are Kept by the Court

The single most common mistake is expecting the jail search to show charges. It does not. To learn the charge, the bond, the next court date, or the outcome, you go to the court that handles the case. Misdemeanors and traffic sit in General District Court, while felonies sit in Circuit Court.

The jail tells you where a person is; the court tells you why.

Use the Henrico County court records systems to find the charge and disposition once a case is filed.

Does the jail search show what someone was charged with? No. The Henrico inmate search lists identity, booking date, facility, and inmate ID only. For the charge, the bond amount, and the next court date, search the case in the Virginia court systems or call the charging agency.

Inmate Mail and Video Visitation

Henrico places no limit on the volume or length of letter mail an inmate may receive, except where clear and convincing evidence justifies a limit. Mail must include the inmate name and ID and the correct facility. Overnight items can come by FedEx or UPS Monday through Friday; do not use USPS for overnight delivery because of processing delays.

Visits are handled by video through a provider.

The Henrico video visitation page explains the GettingOut and GTL setup, including verified email and phone and the Visit Now app.

Henrico County video visitation for inmate records

Visitors set up an account, verify contact details, and download the Visit Now app; GTL technical support is 866-516-0115.

The video setup has a few steps that trip people up. The email address and cell number must be verified before a family member or friend becomes a verified contact for the inmate. An inmate may request a contact, and the visitor receives an email when that happens. At the time of the page, an inmate-initiated outgoing visit could only be completed on a visitor's smartphone, so a computer alone may not work for those visits.

State and Federal Custody Transfers

If someone is not in the Henrico search, they may have moved to state or federal custody, another local jail, or been released. State prison custody is tracked by the Virginia Department of Corrections locator, which updates daily. Federal custody is tracked by the Bureau of Prisons. VINELink offers custody-status notifications across systems.

The federal locator covers custody from 1982 to the present.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator searches federal custody by name or register number.

BOP inmate locator for Henrico County inmate records transfers

A "Released" or "Not in BOP Custody" result does not always mean a person is free. They may be on supervised release, in state or local custody, or held under another name. State prison custody shows in the Virginia Department of Corrections locator, which updates daily but will not discuss specific sentence details with the public.

For release verification and reentry tools, the released inmates page covers VINELink and the state and federal locators, and the jail population page covers facility data.
